Rebecca Jane Arthur

Streaming Consciousness

2017, Book, colour print.

Streaming Consciousness is composed of letters: some letters sent, some letters never sent, and some letters received. Using a narrative technique, the stream of consciousness, Arthur weaves observations, memories, feelings and thoughts into the body of the letters. The illustrations are of letters sent by her father, which correspond or juxtapose with her own position in writing, and drawings of Japanese flower arranging techniques.
Their correspondence is based on her topics of study: portraiture, politics, history, and art. However, while they both share references and reflections on modern thinkers and artists, the cerebral is met with the personal. The reader senses a longing to communicate on both sides, which gradually, through writing and the sharing of one’s masters, becomes quenched.
