Esperança de janeiro was filmed in January in Rio whilst the city was undergoing preparations for Carnival, a supposedly peaceful and democratic celebration. However, like the city itself, where there is beauty and happiness, there is also poverty and cruelty. Carnival brings everyone to the streets, consuming the city and showcasing its pleasures and pains.
